Greetings and Happy New Year to all of you!!  Boy, we have had a tremendous beginning to 2009!!! On the national level, we have a new administration that seems to have brought new life to our country in many ways! It was so nice to see people from all walks of life, young and old and all races get involved in the political process like they never have done before. Even my 13 year old daughter and all her friends were discussing politics!  How awesome is that!

As for Local and State happenings, it’s been a tumultuous beginning to 2009. We have had ice and snow storms, trees down, record number power outages and schools closing down for days at
a time. People were without food, heat, money and the basic necessities of life. School Social Workers can really make a difference during these times as we reach out to help. I know we can make a difference in the lives of the children and families that we serve throughout the State of Kentucky.  It is amazing to think we are already just months away from ending another school year! I guess time flies when you are having fun! Spring is upon us and there are quite a few things getting ready to take “bloom”! We will celebrate School Social Work Week during the week of March 1 -7. Each KASSW member should be contacted by your KASSW Regional Representative regarding a mini celebration during that week. It’s one of the benefits of paying your dues, so stay tuned. You will also receive your School Social Work Week packets during the same week.

I am excited as I begin a new term of being KASSW President.  Yes this is my 2nd time around. I guess once you have KASSW in your blood, it is hard not to continue to be involved. We want to help make KASSW a viable organization that will thrive through the years long after we retire. Hopefully we can get more of you to come on board as we could use some of your energy and innovative
ideas as we move into a new administration.  There is a lot of information in this issue so be sure to read each article. Please consider getting involved with KASSW as your New Year’s resolution. We have representatives that sit on the Midwest SSW Council where many legislatives issues are discussed that may directly affect the state of Kentucky. There is much going on behind the scenes to try to make change for SSW’s as we all pursue our careers on a daily basis. We need your representation, your involvement and your meaningful ideas. We cannot function without the support of our SSW colleagues. I challenge you to GET INVOLVED!
